Watchseries; And new. All right, I don't get the low ratings at all unless the raters were expecting something they had already made up their minds they were going to see. I went into this not expecting anything, but what I got was something different and frankly, the only thing worth watching on Apple TV. Anachronistic? Yes, so what? Anything like the real Emily Dickinson? Except that we can be sure she didn't talk 2020 hip, who knows what the real Emily Dickinson was like? For the record, I'm well over 65 and I loved the imagination that went into this series. I love TV from the 60s and 70s, for what it was. I love this for what it is - different, imaginative, fresh.

Dickinson watchseries. I wasn't sure about watching this simply because I'm not a lover of historical series. However from episode 1 Hailee Steinfeld's Emily had me hooked.
It's fast and funny and quirky and there are only 2 people who could have taken this role: Steinfeld and Winona Ryder.
Krakowski brings a fiery funny to it too and the rest of the cast are very able.
I'm not interested in the life of Emily Dickinson, I just love the show for what it is.

Once you give in to the stylized approach it works really well. I was not expecting to like this at all but I found the music, acting and story quite addicting. Really unique take on this talented and misunderstood poet.

The real Emily Dickinson was a dull boring person who never left the comforts of her upper middle class family. She barely left the house. Later on, barely left the bedroom. She probably had anxiety, which is sad, yet this is no basis for an entire show. The movie was a stretch. She had little to no real life experience at all. She had no romantic relationships. She probably died having not enjoyed the pleasures of adult relations. She never travelled. You could not find a more boring figure in history.
Yes her poetry is good. I have a book of her collected works. I admire her simple and insightful style. However, she as an individual, is nothing to be admired. This show is pure fantasy. It has taken her name and built an imaginary person around it. Your life is more interesting than hers ever was. Programmers today will do anything to today to promote women's interests. Surely they could have found other women in history with more exciting lives than than one.
If you're going to invent a historically inaccurate female character, then make one up. There must have been millions of poor people who did have exciting lives, albeit difficult, hard working and no doubt imbued with tragedy. A hundred times more difficult than hers. Yet, we have no historical records of the working classes. Only the dull safe upper classes, like the Brontes. And this one.
Is this supposed to 'inspire' young girls? To do what? Live in your bedroom? Protected by mummy and daddy and never work or take any risks at all? Because that's the reality of this person's life. A terrible idea for a role model.

The lead is soooo cringey - she is always so selfish in all the parts she plays
The uniqueness of this show cannot overcome my abject irritation every time I set eyes on her..... was the same for me in 'Age of 17'

I love Hailee Steinfeld and loved the idea behind this show but it really felt like they were pulling their punches too much and they should've come up with much more outrageous and out-of-this-world stuff like in the movie "A Million Ways to Die in the West."
