Watchseries; Mixed racial family/relationships, check; lesbian couple, check; a transexual supporting character, check. Thematically this show is trying really hard to be really Canadian or really PC/Progressive.
Sentimentally the show is so far interesting/entertaining judging from the 2 aired episodes. Characters-wise the 3 or 2.5 most likeable characters are in order: Abigail, Jerri, and maybe Abigail's mom but I don't know her that well yet.
Jewel's Abigail is definitely the show stealing essential core of the serie, damaged, callous/blunt but actually the most empathetic, independent, and caring individual, compared to her gleefully negligent father, her obnoxiously narcissistic douchebag half brother, her self-righteous half sister, and her egotistical jerk of a husband. She is the one toughened through the years of neglect and abandonment, betrayal and misunderstanding by the people who were supposed to be loving, caring, and supporting her.
Jerri is the character which is not here purely for the transsexual representation but actually for her wisdom, wit, and sass.
Abby's mom is the sort of "still got it" cougar-socialite who managed to raise her daughter and still can command the scene and the grandchildren.
My predictions are Lucy will be the first to warm up to Abby, then Cecil the doofus-ish aide/paralegal, then eventually her father and the a-hold half brother.

Family Law watchseries. It's great to see Jewel and Victor working together on screen. Two very accomplished actors can bring a scene together and these two do it consistently throughout each episode. Tonally, this show hits the sweet spot for Canadian audiences and will no doubt appeal to international audiences seeking an optimistic alternative with a wider release. The solid writing that comes out episode after episode makes me believe this show will have legs for many seasons to come.
After seeing episode 1 I was unimpressed, but refrained from writing an opinion. With episode 2 it is a little better, but forget about calling it a series with good legal arguments in a court battle. It keeps trying to raise your emotions, but doesn't make it a likable series.
A series of little merit so far, only get's a rating of 4 for being rather poor.
Love the concept, characters are unique and entertaining, interesting and thought provoking subject matter!
Hmmm... in the first 12 minutes we're introduced to a (insert PC Sexual Term here) man, a multi-racial extended family, a child searching for their identity and a general, verbal, attack on men - after this, we're then introduced to racial intolerance, female bonding, the main characters family - who were never referenced in any way and then the seemingly global idea that Attorneys are also detectives with countless 'sources' of information.
The initial episode is cliché riddled and agenda-constipated at best. The acting below average, the dialogue stilted, the writing agenda-coloured and the actual premise infested with holes.
AVOID!
So excited to see Jewel as a series regular again. I enjoy the synopsis of the show itself and think it had a pretty good start. It seems to have quite a bit of heart to it which I enjoy.
The main characters two step siblings that work at the firm come off as huge jerks. Hope that changes because they are so unlikable and entitled in the first episode I don't want to watch their scenes and could care less about them.
Excited this got a second season before the first aired!
